It has been a night of surprising election results. Add another to the list. Jennifer McCormick has defeated Glenda Ritz in the Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction race. The newcomer McCormick defeated the incumbent Ritz, in a surprising upset by almost 7 percentage points.

Ritz was seen as the favorite but ultimately fell to the upstart on election night… ironically, not unlike the manner in which she upset her own predecessor, Tony Bennett.

McCormick seemed to be well aware of Ritz’s past success against Bennett and therefore attempted to distance herself from him the entire election. Even going as far as to say specifically “I’m not Tony Bennett”.

McCormick inherits a Department of Education that is still working to replace the ISTEP, Indiana’s main standardized test.
