Rep Thomas Massie (R-KY) has authored a bill to eliminate of the department of education. The full bill is provided below via congress.gov:

“115th CONGRESS
1st Session

H. R. 899

To terminate the Department of Education.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

February 7, 2017

Mr. Massie (for himself, Mr. Amash, Mr. Biggs, Mr. Chaffetz, Mr. Gaetz, Mr. Jody B. Hice of Georgia, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Labrador) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Education and the Workforce

A BILL

To terminate the Department of Education.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. TERMINATION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2018.”

For those people who are familiar with legislation, you are probably looking for the rest, but that is the entire text of the bill. Not the summary.

It’s unlikely that the bill makes any real noise in congress. Getting rid of the department of education has been a pipe dream of conservatives for a while, but if the department of education is to die, it will likely take more than a one line bill to kill it.

On the off chance it is taken seriously… the bill would have dire consequences for education.
