Christmas is right around the corner. Santa is making his list and checking it twice. Hopefully, he can make a stop at a few metro Indianapolis schools. If he does, I know exactly what I want:

A better accountability system for measuring school outcomes

I am tired of the alphabet soup ranking system for schools. It’s confusing. It doesn’t mean the same thing for every school which doesn’t seem fair or helpful. We need something better. I don’t know what that something is though. Santa can figure it out though.

A gift card to the teacher store

If you had told me in 2008 that “ten years from now” I would lose my mind in a store that sold almost exclusively posters, pens, and workbooks, I would have called you crazy… but here we are. But in all seriousness, we don’t get paid enough to spend all the money we use on school supplies every year.

A new rolly-chair

Seriously, it’s hard to keep any good furniture for long in a school. I had a good one last year. Came back from summer-break and it was gone. (I think I know which teacher has it too.)

More extracurricular options for students

Can the inner-city schools get some more activities besides basketball? We complain all the time that our students just want to be athletes, yet that is all we expose them to as an option.

Increased Pay

Surely you didn’t think I was going to make it all the way through the list without bringing this up?

Meaningful Professional Development Opportunities

Contrary to popular belief, not all teachers hate professional development. Actually, in my experience, most don’t. They would probably just prefer it not be a monumental waste of time.

I think I have been a good teacher this year, so hopefully, Santa will see fit to bless me with some of the things that I asked for.
