IUPUI, which stands for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, is splitting into two campuses, Indiana University Indianapolis and Purdue University Indianapolis.
Purdue University President Dr. Mung Chiang and Indiana University President Dr. Pamela Whitten signed an agreement at IUPUI on July 14, officially separating the campuses to allow each university to independently operate and expand its offerings.
On her blog “Written by Whitten,” Dr. Whitten said:
“In the coming years, IU will double Indianapolis enrollment in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering. Thanks to the leadership of the Indiana General Assembly, we will also invest $60 million to expand and renovate research facilities in the upcoming Science and Technology Corridor and up to $10 million to attract new STEM faculty to Indianapolis. These efforts will further strengthen our capacity for life-changing research, such as the nearly $12 million in U.S. Department of Defense-funded research that will be led by IU faculty in the School of Science to address a common complication to traumatic brain injury and stroke—an initiative we also announced yesterday.”
In a press release, Dr. Chiang said:
In our state capital, we will expand enrollment. We will create new knowledge. We will build startups. We will connect talents and industry. We will maximize Indy’s unique strengths such as in sports and biomedicine. With Purdue’s independent operation in this urban setting, there are endless new opportunities for students and faculty, and we look forward to hearing your ideas. Please also check out the website, the fact sheet and the FAQ, which will continue to expand during the next year of the transition period.
The dissolution date for IUPUI is June 30, 2024.
Purdue University Indianapolis and Indiana University Indianapolis will launch on July 1, 2024.
